New Garages

In August 2004 Brentwood EMS received from Brentwood Borough 2 garages at the front on the borough building for the housing of our ambulances.   This now means that we are able to have all ambulances and equipment in a central location at the Brentwood Borough Building .   Once we received the final ok our renovation has begun and continues currently.  Brentwood EMS has constructed a wall that separates our bays from the police bay.  Three new garages doors are now present at the front of the borough building.  The garages have been painted, new flooring has been applied and ceiling fans have been hung.  We still continue renovating working on the expansion of our business office and our current base.  We are looking forward to an Open House in early 2005 once we are all finished to show off our new and renewed base.  We would like to extend a special thanks to Mayor Lockhart and Council President Antionelli for their support with our expansion.

The American Heart Association estimates that over 220,000 people die each year from sudden cardiac arrest.  That’s more than 600 deaths a day.  About 75-80 percent of these events occur outside a hospital.  Unfortunately, available statistics show an average 5 percent survival to hospital rate.

The most common initial rhythm of a sudden cardiac arrest is ventricular fibrillation (VF).  VF is a rapid and chaotic heart rhythm resulting in a loss of synchronization between heartbeat and pulse.  The only definitive therapy for VF is defibrillation.  That is why early defibrillation is a critical link in the chain of survival.

Ideally, defibrillation should be given within three minutes of the victims collapse and is unlikely to work after ten minutes.  Each minute of delay drops the odds of survival 7 – 10 percent.  Defibrillation is the only effective treatment of VF.

The American Heart Association estimates that if the national survival rate for cardiac arrest victims could be increased to 20 percent, 50,000 lives would be saved.

The Mason’s Pleasant Hills -Guthrie Lodge No. 759 have donated to the Brentwood Police Department 2 AED units to be placed in police units.  The Officers of Brentwood Police Department act as First Responders to Brentwood Emergency Medical Service.  By placing the AED in the police units,  care can be rendered prior to EMS arrival and thereby increase the survival rate of cardiac arrest victims.  Training and ongoing education of the Brentwood Police Department will be done by Brentwood Emergency Medical Service, a Training Center for the American Heart Association.  Medical oversight will be done by Dr Richard Sullivan and Jefferson Hospital.

All of us are looking forward in becoming a vital part in the Chain of Survival.
