History

Brentwood Emergency Medical Service was founded in 1977 by seven volunteer firemen, who used a converted van ambulance which also doubled as a police patrol vehicle.  Those seven founding members were Brentwood EMS’s first EMT’s.  They were our beginning and we have grown from then.  Those seven founding members were: Ken Lockart, Rick Morrell, Mike Pace, Jack Kurtz, Bob Williams, Greg Wintherhalter, and Ken Peduzzi.

In 1979 Brentwood EMS was reorganized and elected it’s first set of Officers. In 1980 the first Advanced Life Support ambulance was purchased and placed into service and we were able to render advanced care to our patients.  In that same year our first EMS base came into existence in the basement of the borough building.  Brentwood EMS at that time only had one paramedic, Mike Pace .  In 1982 our first paramedics completed training through CCAC.  Throughout our early years, our mentors received several commendations. In 1989, Rick Morrell was named VFW Man of the Year for 1988.  In 1991, Joanne Cook was named as the Pa. Dept of Health Paramedic of the Year.  In 1992, Joanne Cook was named VFW Person of the Year.

We have come a long way since those early years.  Striving to provide excellent patient care we continued to progress forward. In June 1983 Brentwood EMS successfully completed it’s first Voluntary Ambulance Certification.  In 1984 Brentwood Emergency Medical Service was incorporated as a nonprofit corporation.  In June 1986 we purchased our second ambulance, increasing our fleet to two units.  In June 1987, we purchased our first Medic 11, our Supervisor’s response unit.

Excellent patient care continues to be our goal.  In June 1991 we completed our First State Licensure inspection and passed it with flying colors.  In May 1992 we moved form our basement base to the new quarters on the ground level of the borough building. At that time we hired our first paid personnel in an effort to meet our staffing needs. In February 1996, Brentwood EMS purchased our third ambulance Medic 12 to increase our fleet to three ambulances.

Brentwood EMS now operates 3 Advanced Life Support ambulances and 1 supervisor response unit.  In 1997 we celebrated 20 years of service to the residents of Brentwood Borough. We are looking forward to celebrating 25 years of service in 2002.  We operate a paid/volunteer service with the help of 8 paid staff, 8 part-time staff and 32 volunteers.  We are proud of the fact that we have twenty-four volunteers who have 10 active years of volunteer service over our 24 years of existence.  Brentwood EMS is always looking for more volunteers.

Brentwood EMS is located at 3624 Brownsville Road, in the Brentwood Borough Building.

Brentwood EMS is dedicated to providing further education for the public.  We have CPR and First Aid classes at our base.  We also offer informational sessions on “What to do before the ambulance arrives” and general safety topics. Brentwood EMS is active with the American Heart Association and serves as a Community Training Center for approximately 100 CPR instructors.

Brentwood Emergency Medical Service answered 1,832 calls for medical assistance in 2000.  In addition we cover various sporting events, carnivals and borough celebrations.

Whenever there is a call for help, WE ARE THERE.
